Assistant Police Chief Arrested for Domestic Violence

|

An individual may be guilty of domestic violence if he or she is either physically, verbally, emotionally or sexually abusive towards a marital partner, a parent, a family member or another household resident. Sex, race, profession, social status and religion play no role in domestic violence cases. This type of violence can affect any individual from any walk of life. In fact, in one recent domestic violence case an assistant police chief was arrested for physically assaulting his wife.

The arrest apparently occurred only a few hours after the 28-year veteran attended a local event intended to raise awareness on domestic violence and solicit donations to help fight the cause. Police reports indicate the assistant chief has since been charged with assault with bodily injury to a family member, although he was released on bail and is currently on administrative leave pending the completion of the investigation into the matter.

One of the problems I have seen arise during domestic violence cases is a difficulty in identifying who is the abuser and who is the victim. Some cases are based solely on he said/she said allegations with no conclusive evidence or impartial third-party witness to substantial either party's claim. In other instances the alleged victim may recant his or her claim in an effort to "keep the peace" or avoid further retribution. Once a claim or charge has been made, there is no turning back. An investigation will be launched and charges will most likely be filed. The penalties for domestic violence are dependent on a number of factors yet even a first-time offender could face serious penalties and jail time upon conviction.
